Man admits killing but denies murdering "lifelong friend"

Summary

A 51‑year‑old Dublin man, Paul Keating, admitted killing his lifelong friend, 47‑year‑old Mark Richardson, by stabbing him in Richardson's kitchen while Richardson's children were elsewhere in the house. Keating pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter. The incident occurred on 16 March 2017 after the men had bought alcohol and returned to Richardson's home around 1.30 pm. A dispute arose, leading to a scuffle that escalated when Keating suddenly grabbed a kitchen knife and plunged it once into Richardson's right upper chest, then threw the knife into the sink. Richardson collapsed, was taken to hospital, and died about an hour later from a single stab wound that punctured a lung and severed the main pulmonary artery. The trial, opened by Michael Delaney SC before Mr Justice Robert Eagar and a jury, continues tomorrow and is expected to last two weeks.
