Summary
James Redmond, aged 25, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment for mugging his 92‑year‑old neighbour, Deirdre Tobin, in Monkstown, Dublin. Redmond admitted to owing money to drug dealers and said he targeted Tobin because she was an easy victim. On 9 March 2018, after Tobin had collected her pension at the post office, Redmond waited for her at home, grabbed her bag from behind, causing her to fall, and stole €487 in cash. Garda Tony Corcoran described the victim lying on her back when he arrived. Redmond was identified from CCTV footage, arrested at his home, and pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Judge Melanie Greally noted that Redmond had cooperated with police, expressed remorse, and that Tobin was a vulnerable woman who had since entered a nursing home. The court considered the victim's age and vulnerability in sentencing.
