Summary
Gary Murphy, 38, of Church Road, Dublin 1, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assaulting a taxi driver, Mohammed Naseem, on 28 May 2016. Murphy entered Naseem's taxi early in the morning, distracted him with the horn, verbally abused him and threatened to shoot him, reaching into his trousers as if he had a weapon. Naseem sprayed Murphy with body spray; Murphy then struck him six or seven times, causing cuts and swelling. Murphy was heavily intoxicated at the time and had many prior convictions, none involving assault or violence. Judge Melanie Greally sentenced him to three and a half years' imprisonment, suspending the final 12 months on the condition that he keep the peace, behave well and comply with the Probation Service for 12 months after release.
