Driver stopped by gardai had two fully loaded revolvers

Summary

In March 2018, William McCarthy, 28, was stopped by Gardaí in a Ford Mondeo parked at Monastery Gate Avenue, Clondalkin, where two fully loaded .38 special calibre Smith and Wesson revolvers were found in the glove box. McCarthy, who had 72 prior convictions including drug and traffic offences, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of the firearms. The weapons were in good working condition, each loaded with five bullets. McCarthy claimed he was pressured by a drug debt to acquire the guns, and he expressed remorse, citing his father's illness and his own drug relapse after his daughter's birth. He was sentenced to six and a half years, with the final 18 months suspended on conditions such as engaging with the Probation Service for 12 months upon release. He remains remanded in custody.
