Suspended sentences for teens who defiled autistic girl
Summary
Two 19‑year‑old men pleaded guilty to defilement of a 14‑year‑old autistic girl in a bush on 25 January 2016. Mr Justice Paul McDermott sentenced each to 18 months imprisonment, suspending the entire term for two years under strict conditions, including no contact with the victim. The men, aged 16 and 15 at the time, were part of a group of six boys who went to a field where the victim and a younger boy entered a bush and engaged in sexual activity. The men were encouraged by other boys to join. Neither wore a condom, and the victim was in school uniform. The court heard no evidence of force or that the men knew of the victim's autism or age. The victim's impact statement described feeling dirty, unsafe and worthless, but also noted progress in coping with trauma.
