Ten years for man who repeatedly abused toddler
Summary
A Dublin man, now 52, was sentenced to ten years' imprisonment after a jury convicted him of 56 charges of sexual assault against his cousin, a toddler aged two and a half to five, between January 1982 and August 1986. The assaults involved forcing his penis into the child's mouth while she was placed on a toilet seat, and the man was under 18 for most of the incidents. He denies the offences. The victim, who could not be named, gave a victim impact statement describing lifelong terror, a loss of the ability to love, and an attempt to kill herself at 15. She was shocked by the accused's denial at the trial. The judge, Patricia Ryan, considered the severity of the abuse, the age gap, the prolonged period of offending, and the victim's suffering, while noting the accused's prior good character, employment, voluntary work and family hardship, before imposing the ten‑year sentence.
