The incident followed a previous assault in September 2015, for which Genov had been convicted in 2018. On the night in question, a third doorman was glassed, and Genov, believing McEvoy had pushed the assailant, punched him three times in the head and face. McEvoy sustained a chipped tooth, facial tissue damage and eye cuts, and later received €30,000 in a civil claim. Genov had continued working as a security officer until the March 2020 lockdown. Judge Elma Sheahan, acknowledging the difficult nature of the job, imposed a 20‑month prison term, suspending the final eight months on the condition of good behaviour. The court noted Genov's prior record and the aggravating factor that the assault occurred in the course of his duties. Galin Genov pleaded guilty.
