Teen who kicked defenceless man to death sentenced to life with review
Summary
A 17‑year‑old, who cannot be named because he is a minor, was sentenced by the Central Criminal Court to life detention with a review after eight years for the murder of 39‑year‑old Romanian national Claudio Robu. The boy, who was 16 at the time of the offence, pleaded guilty and was found to have used "extreme violence" by repeatedly kicking Robu to death in a laneway off Madison Road, South Circular Road, Dublin 8 on 14 September 2020. The sentencing judge, Mr Justice Paul McDermott, noted the offender's high moral culpability, his knowledge of the act, and the disturbing fact that he returned hours later to continue the fatal attack. He also highlighted the youth's volatile nature, lack of empathy, and history of neglect and abuse, while acknowledging mitigating factors such as his age, guilty plea, and demonstrated remorse.
