Summary

The jury in the nine‑week trial of five Munster family members accused of child abuse was sent home for the bank holiday weekend and will resume deliberations on Tuesday. Mr Justice Paul McDermott ordered the break after a juror fell ill, noting there is no time limit and the jury should return verdicts based on the evidence. The accused, ranging in age from 27 to 56, are parents, an aunt and uncles of the children. They are charged with abusing three children between 2014 and 2016 and neglecting five of their own children. All defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Reporting restrictions protect the children's identities and welfare. The trial continues with the jury expected to reconvene after the long weekend.
