Man goes on trial accused of shotgun blast that left dog dead

David Ward, 36, of The Beeches, Clonshaugh Woods, Coolock, is on trial at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for the reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm. The incident occurred on 17 September 2016 at Belcamp Lane, Dublin 17, when Ward allegedly fired a shotgun into his cousin John Ward's home, fatally wounding the cousin's dog. Ward pleaded not guilty to both charges. His defence lawyer, Keith Spencer BL, argued that while shots were fired, Ward was not involved. John Ward testified that Ward had come to his house to complain about children playing "nick nacks" and that a brief altercation followed, during which Ward allegedly threatened to shoot. Witnesses reported hearing a bang, seeing sparks on the back door, and observing Ward standing on the back wall. The witness also claimed that Ward fired a fourth shot that killed a dog, describing the dog as being struck in the back of the head.
