Dublin man sentenced to six months after striking fellow prisoner with sweeping brush

Summary

Stephen Seery, aged 34, was sentenced to six months in prison for violent disorder after striking fellow inmate Noel Murray with a sweeping brush at Wheatfield Prison on 21 January 2013. Seery, a resident of Ballyogan Vale, Carrickmines in Dublin 18, had previously pleaded guilty to the offence. The incident occurred when Murray had run out of his cell following an alleged assault by other inmates; Seery waited on the landing and repeatedly struck Murray with the brush as he emerged, an act captured on CCTV. Seery has 46 prior convictions and had been released from prison the previous December, during which he reportedly addressed his drug problems. He has a young child and has expressed a desire to improve his life. Judge Martin Nolan noted that such behaviour is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated in prison.
