'First and last chance' for boxer who punched security guard

Summary

In a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court hearing on 20 October 2022, Judge Martin Nolan sentenced 26‑year‑old Martin Collins to a 21‑month prison term suspended on strict conditions after Collins pleaded guilty to assault causing harm for punching a Tesco security guard in Santry on 5 July 2019. Collins entered the store with his partner, bought groceries and cigarettes but did not pay for the groceries. When a security guard asked him to pay, Collins, who identified himself as a boxer, punched the guard in the face. The guard fell, sustained a swollen right eye and thumb injury, and was later assisted by other guards. CCTV showed Collins raised his fist and threw three punches, two of which connected. Collins attempted a third blow but was blocked.
