Eamon Butterly completes first day of evidence to Stardust Inquest
Summary
During the first day of evidence at the Stardust inquest, manager Eamon Butterly testified that the nightclub's staff received no fire‑safety training. He said that responsibility for training lay with head doorman Tom Kennan, who would hire experienced doormen, and that general manager Brian Peel was ultimately responsible for staff training. Butterly denied having a role in hiring and claimed he was unaware of any policy requiring fire‑safety instruction. He recounted that on the night of the February 14, 1981 fire, the doormen were told the exits were unlocked and that they had men stationed at each exit. Butterly also stated that he had no recollection of any exit doors being locked or of any obstructions to exits, and that he had not been told of any incidents involving sparks or smoke prior to the fire. His testimony was read into the record and will continue tomorrow in the Pillar Room of the Rotunda Hospital.
