Husband convicted of raping wife with household objects
Summary
A 49‑year‑old Dublin man was found guilty of 11 counts of sexually assaulting his wife by penetrating her vagina with various household objects, including a knife, cheese grater, bottle, carrot, banana, cucumber, tulip, wooden spatula, decanter stopper, part of a shoe and a bicycle pump. He had previously been acquitted of one count of raping her with a deodorant bottle, one count of raping her with his finger, and two counts of anally raping her. The alleged abuse took place in the family home between January 2005 and September 2014. After about three and a half hours of deliberation, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all counts. The woman wept as the verdicts were handed down; the defendant made no reaction. Mr Justice Paul Burns thanked the jury, excused them from duty for seven years, remanded the man in custody and adjourned sentencing for December 18. The unnamed accused pleaded not guilty.
