Summary

A 49‑year‑old Dublin man was found guilty by a jury of 11 counts of sexually assaulting his wife, who had been married to him for 20 years, between January 2005 and September 2014. The assaults involved penetrating her vagina with a range of household objects – a knife, a cheese grater, a bottle, a carrot, a banana, a cucumber, a tulip, a wooden spatula, a decanter stopper, part of a shoe and a bicycle pump – while she was unconscious. The abuse was discovered when the wife found images of the assaults on her husband's computer in March 2019. She had reported the abuse to the Gardaí and asked him to leave the family home. The man, who has no prior convictions, maintained that all acts were consensual. Mr Justice Paul Burns sentenced him to 12 years, suspending the final year, and imposed conditions including a course on sexuality and consent upon release.
