A 17‑year‑old, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of heroin for sale or supply on 7 October 2014 at Tom Kelly Flats, Tom Kelly Road. He was wearing two pairs of boxer shorts to conceal three knotted bags of heroin (70.5 g, €9,785 street value) and the keys to a Renault Kangoo van. Garda John Donnelly, on routine patrol, spotted the teenager, who fled, and after a brief struggle he was arrested. The van, locked and later opened with the teenager's keys, contained a further stash of heroin and paraphernalia. The teenager had no prior convictions and had not attracted Garda attention before. Judge Martin Nolan, noting the law that prison should be the last resort for juveniles, suspended a two‑and‑a‑half‑year term on strict conditions, stating that imprisonment was not justified at the moment.
