Chef sentenced to five years for three-week crime spree
Summary
Desmond Dunne, 39, a former chef from Clondalkin now living in a hostel on Manor Street, was sentenced to five years in prison for a series of robberies and an attempted raid carried out between 26 November and 18 December 2014. He used a syringe and a blade to threaten staff at five Dublin pharmacies, stealing prescription drugs and cash. Dunne admitted the offences and pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He has 23 prior convictions, including four for robbery. The judge, Melaine Greally, noted his long‑term drug addiction and the role it played in the crimes. The last 18 months of the sentence were suspended on strict conditions, requiring cooperation with the Probation Service and drug treatment. The court emphasised that the robberies were motivated by his desire to support his addiction. The case was investigated by Detective Garda Eoin Colbert, who identified Dunne through CCTV and seized clothing matching the robber's attire.
