Dublin man faces sentence of up to 12.5 years for serious assault
Summary
Sean Kenny, aged 24, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Raphael Momoh, aged 21, on Parkgate Street on 29 January 2013. Kenny struck Momoh in the eye with a broken glass bottle, cutting the cornea and leaving scarring on the eyelids. Momoh required a corneal transplant to restore vision. The assault left Momoh legally blind in the left eye. Kenny has 49 prior convictions and is currently serving a sentence for drug dealing and violent disorder. The case was adjourned after evidence was heard in December to allow the Director of Public Prosecutions to advise on the appropriate sentencing range. The maximum sentence for the offence is life imprisonment, with the DPP indicating a "most serious" range of seven and a half to twelve and a half years. The court ordered a probation report and adjourned sentencing to 16 March.
