"Gofer" who showed stolen car to be assessed for community service

Summary

Brian Cox, a 38‑year‑old father from Boot Road, Clondalkin, was caught by Garda Steve Kelly showing a stolen car that had been advertised on DoneDeal.ie. The vehicle, reported stolen almost a month earlier, was found to have a false NCT disc. Cox pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possessing the stolen car and using a false NCT disc on Chapelizod Road, Chapelizod, on 1 April 2015. He has 39 prior convictions, including thefts and drug offences. During the hearing, defence counsel Fiona Pekaar argued that Cox had faced intimidation from an old drug debt and had not been in trouble with Gardaí since 2009. Judge Melanie Greally adjourned the case to obtain a probation report and assess Cox's suitability for community service, rather than imposing a custodial sentence.
