No jail for man who rammed stolen car through gates of apartment complex

James Dunphy, 21, of Lally Road, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty in the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to unlawful use of a car, damaging a second car and causing about €21,553 of damage to gates at Rosebank Apartments, Clondalkin, on 14 December 2013. He had previously been convicted nine times at district court level. Garda Gavin Duffy reported that CCTV showed Dunphy and a co‑accused entering the complex, forcing open a silver Honda Civic and a second car, hot‑wired the Civic, and drove it into the gates. They attempted to exit but could not find a buzzer, tampered with the gate mechanism and ultimately rammed two gates before escaping onto street level. Judge Melanie Greally, after reviewing a positive probation report, suspended Dunphy's two‑year sentence for three years and ordered 12 months of probation supervision.
