Murder accused told gardai he stabbed housemate during fight
Summary
In a Central Criminal Court hearing on 12 July 2016, Andrzej Wawrzyniak, aged 38, pleaded not guilty to the murder of Jacek Kozakiewicz, aged 44, who was stabbed at a derelict pub on Dublin's North Wall Quay on 26 February 2014. Wawrzyniak also pleaded guilty to a second count of assault causing harm to Filip Talaj, aged 31, at the same location and date. Garda interviews revealed that Wawrzyniak described a fight with Kozakiewicz, who he said was aggressive and often threatened to kill him when drunk. Wawrzyniak claimed he was terrified and stabbed Kozakiewicz four times in self‑defence, though post‑mortem results later showed 22 stab wounds. He expressed remorse and said he would live with the incident for the rest of his life. The trial was set to continue the following day before Justice Robert Eagar and a jury of nine men and three women.
