"Unofficial carer" stole €41k from elderly neighbour
Summary
Laura Pennick, 29, pleaded guilty to stealing €41,935 from her elderly neighbour Marie McNally between January 2010 and December 2012. Pennick had become McNally's "unofficial carer", collecting her pension and paying her bills, and had access to McNally's ATM cards and two bank accounts, including one holding an inheritance from her late mother's house. She withdrew amounts ranging from very small sums up to €600, spending the money on home improvements, fashion purchases, home furnishings, appliances and holidays. McNally discovered the loss, was extremely upset and her financial position became perilous. Pennick, who has 29 previous convictions including five thefts, claimed financial worries and expressed remorse, offering €3,900 to McNally. Judge Melanie Greally adjourned the case for a probation services report, noting the serious breach of trust, and the sentencing is scheduled for November 7.
