Leitrim County Council has announced a series of temporary road closures across the county to accommodate sporting events, infrastructure work and a popular music festival. The council’s notices are issued under Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993 and Article 12 of the Roads Regulations 1994, giving it the authority to close public roads for the duration required.

The most widely publicised closure will take place on Saturday 11 July 2026 in support of the Tom Devaney Memorial Hillclimb. Roads in County Leitrim will be closed from 08:30 to 18:30 that day, with emergency vehicles and essential deliveries exempt from any restrictions. The council has not yet published a list of the specific roads affected, but motorists are advised to check local notices for details.

Earlier this month the council issued a notice proposing a temporary closure of the R209 between Keshcarrigan and Fenagh to carry out water‑mains rehabilitation works. The decision will be finalised once engineering assessments are complete, and no dates have yet been set. Residents in Fenagh and surrounding areas should anticipate possible detours and reduced access during the works; emergency services and essential deliveries remain exempt.

In addition, a three‑day closure is scheduled for the June bank holiday weekend to accommodate the Cowboys and Heroes music festival in Drumcoura City. From 12 pm on Friday 29 May until 9 pm on Monday 1 June two roads in South Leitrim will be closed. The first, the L5501 known locally as Derrygoan, will run from the Corgar junction with the R199 to the crossroads with the R204. The second closure will affect the access road from the R204 crossroads in front of Drumcoura City to the junction with the R199 at Corgar. Emergency vehicles, local access and Park‑and‑Ride buses are exempt from these closures.

Motorists should plan alternative routes where possible and keep an eye on council notices for any updates or changes to the closure schedules. For full details see the Leitrim County Council notice.
