Labour Court cannot recommend conceding hospital staff’s claim for extra pay

The Labour Court could not recommend conceding the Irish Municipal, Public and Civil Trade Union’s claim for extra pay or time off for five clerical and administrative staff at Waterford Regional Hospital who missed mandatory breaks. The decision was dated 6 March 2013. The union sought retrospective compensation and an assurance that staff could take breaks in future. HSE South said staff received a 3.5-hour compensatory rest period and were not entitled to extra pay for untaken breaks. The Court found that granting the claim would increase costs and that it was precluded by the Public Service Agreement 2010–2014.
