In 1987, the Labour Court upheld a recommendation that Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital refund a porter one and a half days’ pay. The decision was signed on 16 April 1987. The dispute followed the porter’s refusal to shave after being instructed to do so. The Rights Commissioner found he was at least 50% responsible for his loss of pay and recommended the refund. The Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union appealed, seeking two and a half days’ pay and a £3 allowance. The hospital said the porter had previously appeared untidy or unshaven and was expected to meet its appearance standards. The Court found no grounds to alter the recommendation.
