In 1987, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that a worker on a Coras Iompair Eireann newspaper delivery route was not entitled to a second meal break unless his duty exceeded 12 hours. The decision was signed on 16 April 1987. The National Association of Transport Employees appealed on the worker’s behalf, arguing that he should receive a second break on the return journey. Coras Iompair Eireann said his schedule did not exceed 12 hours, the threshold for a second meal allowance. The Court decided that the recommendation should stand.
