In 1987, the Labour Court rejected Coras Iompair Eireann’s appeal and upheld a £75 disturbance payment for each of eight garage workers temporarily moved during reconstruction at Cavan. The decision was signed by Evelyn Owens on 8 June 1987.
The company had moved maintenance work to a temporary garage about three miles away while rebuilding its Cavan depot. It argued that the move was temporary and that conditions there were as good as, or better than, those in the old garage.
The Automobile, General Engineering and Mechanical Operatives Union described the temporary workshop as being in poor repair, difficult to heat and without adequate facilities. It also said the move meant longer journeys, higher petrol costs and inconvenience for workers. The Court found that they had been inconvenienced by conditions in the temporary garage and agreed that the £75 payment should be made to each worker.
