Labour Court upholds Bus Atha Cliath appeal over bus workers’ compensation claim

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

Labour Court ·

In 1987, the Labour Court upheld Bus Atha Cliath’s appeal against a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that it concede the National Busworkers Union’s compensation claim. The decision was signed on 23 July 1987.

The claim concerned about 1,500 workers and the delay in implementing a five-day week between 1 March and 17 May 1987. The union sought two days’ pay for each five-week cycle, arguing that workers whose union accepted the proposals should not lose out. Bus Atha Cliath said it could not implement the change until all unions agreed. The Court said compensation to one union for delays caused by the need to reach agreement with other unions would create an undesirable precedent.
