Labour Court backs recommendation in literary editor dispute

By Tadhg O'Sullivan

Labour Court ·

In 1989, the Labour Court recommended accepting a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation and supplementary proposals in a dispute over a literary editor’s access to incoming books at Independent Newspapers PLC. The decision was dated 24 February 1989. The National Union of Journalists appealed on the worker’s behalf, saying the way books were handled disrupted the literary editor’s work. Independent Newspapers said its editor needed first sight of books to decide how they could be used across the newspaper. The Court found that handling incoming material did not limit the literary editor’s editorial discretion. It said the recommendation and supplementary proposals were the best way to address the practical difficulties.
