Labour Court reduces Laurel Stores worker’s compensation to £500

By Eimear Byrne

Labour Court ·

The Labour Court reduced to £500 the compensation recommended for a shop worker dismissed by Liam Walsh, trading as Laurel Stores. Its decision was dated 21 March 1991.

The worker appealed a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation of £700 after the commissioner found her dismissal unfair. Walsh said her timekeeping had deteriorated and cited concerns about goods being taken from the shop without payment. The worker said she had not been warned that her job was at risk.

The Labour Court left the recommendation unchanged apart from reducing the compensation to £500.
