In 1993, the Labour Court rejected the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers Union’s appeal against a Rights Commissioner’s recommendations on work-method changes at Waterford Continental Cheese, a subsidiary of Waterford Foods PLC. The decision was signed on 21 December. The recommendations covered work practices, breaks, overtime and payments. The union opposed changes it said could affect overtime and staffing. Waterford Foods said changes were needed to reduce losses and keep the plant competitive. The Court found the Rights Commissioner’s recommendations reasonable and their acceptance necessary to maintain employment at the plant. A separate question about implementing Clause 3 of the PESP was not properly before the Court, which advised the parties to use normal procedures.
