Labour Court rejects Bus Eireann appeal over £84.99 in stolen takings

In 1996, the Labour Court rejected Bus Eireann’s appeal and upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that the National Bus And Rail Union’s claim be conceded on a once-off basis. The decision was dated 29 February 1996. The dispute concerned £84.99 in takings stolen from a driver's car in Eyre Square. Bus Eireann sought reimbursement, arguing the driver should have lodged the cash before leaving its premises. The union said he intended to lodge it at the depot and was still at work when the car was stolen. The Court noted an apparent acceptance of the practice of not lodging takings immediately after work.
