In 1999, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that North Star Hotel pay £400 in compensation after unfairly dismissing a cleaner. The Court rejected the worker’s appeal in a decision signed on 20 September 1999, finding that she had not been given a contract and that appropriate procedures were not followed before her dismissal. The hotel said the dismissal followed incidents involving the worker and senior staff. She denied the allegations and said she had received no warning about her performance. The Rights Commissioner had found that the hotel’s account relied on hearsay contradicted by the worker, and that she should have been told about performance concerns and given an opportunity to respond.
