The WRC rejected an employee’s unfair dismissal complaint, finding that the employer acted reasonably in ending his employment after six months of unauthorised absence. The decision was dated 30 March 2016. The employee said he believed his unpaid leave was authorised and that he only needed to agree a return date. The employer said he left without permission, missed expected return dates and was difficult to contact. The WRC found the leave had never been authorised and that the employer made more than reasonable efforts to maintain contact. It also found the employee could not provide a foreseeable return date when asked. The WRC concluded that ending his employment was fair and reasonable.
