WRC awards customer €1,400 after finding race discrimination by bus provider

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC found that a bus driver treated a customer differently because of his race and ordered the public transportation provider to pay €1,400 compensation.

The customer said the driver let two white colleagues board while refusing him, then stopped the service after he boarded. The provider said he was refused travel because of his behaviour; the driver said he shouted at him.

Adjudication officer Kevin Baneham found that CCTV showed the driver looking ahead as the customer and a white man tried to get his attention, then turning to open the door when a white woman approached. The WRC decision was dated 12 October 2016.

The harassment element was not well founded, and the customer did not pursue victimisation. The compensation was for the effects of the discriminatory treatment.
