WRC recommends €10,000 payment to retired director of social work

By Orla Quinn

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC recommended that a public service body pay a retired director of social work €10,000 for additional work she undertook late in her career. Adjudication Officer Michael Hayes dated the recommendation 19 October 2016.

The worker said she served in the role for 19 months on the understanding that she would be regraded and formally appointed, but that this did not happen. The public service body said the appointment lacked national approval, recruitment rules applied and the post was not part of its structure.

The officer accepted that the worker had performed the function during a difficult period and had been assured that the plan would be pursued for national approval. He recommended an ex-gratia payment in full and final settlement of matters arising from the employment relationship.
