WRC rejects student’s discrimination complaint over refused grant

By Eimear Byrne

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission found that a student’s complaint over a refused 2015 grant was not well founded in a decision dated 15 May 2017.

The student, who was repeating the third year of a law degree, alleged the refusal was discriminatory on grounds of religion, race and age. The grant administrator said the scheme did not fund repeat study and that the student did not meet the guidelines for exceptional-circumstances funding.

The student acknowledged having no proof linking the refusal to the protected grounds and had not appealed the grant decision. The adjudication officer found the refusal was based on repeat study and the student’s failure to meet the exceptional-circumstances criteria, not on religion, race or age.
