The WRC found that a landlord and its agent discriminated against a tenant on the rent allowance ground and ordered €2,500 compensation and training for the landlords’ estate agents. The decision was dated 7 November 2017.
The tenant said she was refused a rental property after telling the agent she received rent supplement. The agent asked for details of the payment and said he would not hold the property while her application was processed. After she arranged for her Community Welfare Officer to confirm the application, the agent told her the property had gone. The landlords denied discrimination, saying about half their tenants received rent allowance.
The WRC found the tenant’s account credible and undisputed, and found that the landlords had not rebutted the case of direct discrimination. It dealt with the complaint under reference CA-00003655-001 and deemed the other 11 listed references dealt with accordingly.
