The Workplace Relations Commission rejected a travelling merchandiser’s unfair dismissal complaint, finding the redundancy was genuine and her dismissal was not related to pregnancy or maternity. The decision was dated 15 December 2016. The employer said its client wanted locally based Merchandisers who could visit stores more often. The WRC accepted that the change was made for a business reason and that the complainant was the only travelling merchandiser, making her selection for redundancy effectively self-selecting. It found no suitable alternative work had been shown to be available and no credible evidence linked the dismissal to pregnancy or maternity.
