The WRC rejected a hair stylist’s unfair dismissal complaint after finding he had less than one year’s service. Adjudication Officer Roger McGrath, in a decision dated 23 May 2017, found the stylist began work on 6 April 2015 and was dismissed on 23 March 2016. The hair salon said his employment began on 6 April 2015 and ended on 26 March 2016. The stylist argued that he started on 1 April and that the contract giving the later date was unsigned. The adjudicator found he received one week’s pay in lieu of notice, which extended his service to 2 April 2016, but that still fell short of the one-year qualifying period for an unfair dismissal claim.
