The WRC awarded a tyre fitter €20,000 after finding tyre services unfairly dismissed him. The decision was dated 9 February 2017.
Tyre services said he had taken €70 from the day’s takings without permission. The worker said it was the balance of his usual €400 weekly wages after he received €330 in cash. The adjudication officer found the cash-envelope record supported his account and that the company’s witness was unreliable.
The officer found the company had prejudged the allegation, failed to investigate properly or hear the worker’s defence, and offered an appeal to the managing director who had made the dismissal decision. The WRC upheld the complaint and ordered tyre services to pay €20,000 compensation.
