WRC recommends airline and SIPTU review staff mobility

By Donal Gilhooly

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission recommended that the airline and SIPTU examine staff mobility between legacy and new entrant grades, after declining to recommend a transfer for a general operative who wanted to keep his existing grade and terms. The decision was dated 18 November 2016. The worker sought a move to another department while retaining his legacy grade C terms. The airline said the vacancy was an entry grade A post and that promotions under a 2008 agreement used new entrant terms. The worker pointed to an initial advertisement that did not specify a grade, but the adjudicator found that version was an error and did not create a legitimate expectation. The adjudicator said the agreement applied to new contracts made after 1 January 2009, so he could not recommend the requested transfer on legacy terms. He recommended that the airline and SIPTU examine mobility between legacy and new entrant grades.
