WRC awards €500 after estate agent refused rent allowance recipient a viewing

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC awarded €500 after finding that an estate agent discriminated against a rent allowance recipient in a decision dated 4 July 2017. The complaint succeeded on rent allowance grounds but failed on race grounds.

The complainant said he called about a flat viewing and was refused after saying he received rent allowance. The estate agent said the advertisement’s wording had been left in error and denied race discrimination.

The adjudication officer found the advertisement stating that rent allowance was not accepted established discrimination, and that the agent had not rebutted the allegation about the phone call. The officer found there was insufficient evidence to establish discrimination on race grounds.
