The Workplace Relations Commission awarded a job applicant €750 after finding that a retail outlet discriminated against her on racial grounds during an interview for a sales assistant role. The decision was dated 25 November 2016.
The applicant, who is of Thai origin, said the interviewer asked about her nationality and her parents’ origins. The adjudication officer found those questions irrelevant to the job and concluded that a white Irish applicant would not have faced them. The applicant was later offered the position and worked there for about a month. The respondent did not attend the hearing.
