WRC dismisses bank customer’s race and religion discrimination complaint

By Saoirse Doyle

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission dismissed a bank customer’s complaint alleging race and religion discrimination in the provision of banking services. The decision was dated 5 May 2017.

The customer said the bank had denied access to a current account, savings account, debit card and online banking. The bank said its actions followed the customer’s changing financial risk profile and that the accounts had not been closed when they were transferred to its recoveries unit.

The adjudication officer found that the statutory exception for treatment based on risk assessment applied. The officer also found no evidence to substantiate race or religious discrimination and dismissed the claims on that factual ground. The complaint failed on its merits.
