WRC rejects meat factory worker’s discrimination and victimisation claims

By Niamh Kearney

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC found that a worker’s complaints of race and religion discrimination and victimisation against a meat factory were not well founded. A duplicate complaint was withdrawn. The worker alleged unfair treatment over slaughter work, hours, pay, breaks and religious leave, and said he faced victimisation after another Egyptian worker brought a personal injuries claim. The employer denied the allegations. Adjudication Officer Enda Murphy, in a decision dated 17 May 2017, accepted the employer’s evidence that the training records applied across the workforce and found the worker had not established discrimination. He also found that another employee’s personal injuries proceedings were not a protected act for his victimisation claim.
