The Workplace Relations Commission found that a worker at a meat factory had not established race or religion discrimination in his employment conditions, or victimisation. The decision, dated 18 May 2017, also records that a duplicate complaint was withdrawn. The worker complained about training records, work allocation and hours, pay, breaks, treatment by a manager, religious leave and an incident involving a family emergency. The WRC found that the factory’s training records were being updated for all lamb abattoir staff and that the worker had not shown race discrimination in the matters raised. It found no less favourable treatment over religious leave or access to a prayer room. The victimisation claim concerned a personal injury case brought by another employee. The WRC found that this did not count as a protected act under the Employment Equality Acts, so the claim could not succeed. The worker’s separate complaint reference was withdrawn as a duplicate.
