WRC recommends phasing out grounds keeper’s public-holiday work by 2019

By Cathal Brosnan

Workplace Relations Commission ·

A WRC adjudication officer recommended that a health care employer gradually reduce a grounds keeper’s public-holiday shifts, ending them in 2019, with compensation for the lost holidays. The decision was dated 19 January 2017. The worker had traditionally worked public holidays and said a red-circle agreement protected his terms. The officer said the agreement should be acknowledged, while the employer could review work arrangements after consultation and in line with the public-sector agreement. The recommendation set out a phased reduction from seven public holidays in 2016 to none in 2019, with compensation at 1.5 times the worker’s entitlement for nine lost holidays.
