WRC rejects administrator’s unfair dismissal claim after redundancy

By Eimear Byrne

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission found that an administrator was not unfairly dismissed after being selected for redundancy by a social welfare office. Adjudication officer Patsy Doyle dated the decision 9 August 2017. The office said reduced live-register numbers and a smaller budget led it to cut staff, using a last in, first out selection process. The complainant argued that there had been inadequate consultation and that she was unfairly selected. The officer found there was a genuine redundancy and that the selection was not unfair. The complainant chose to leave before her notice period ended after seeking an early release; the officer found the employer had not acted unreasonably. The complaint failed on its merits.
