The Workplace Relations Commission awarded an apprentice €20,000 for unfair dismissal and €720 for minimum notice, a total of €20,720. The decision was dated 25 April 2017.
The apprentice said his boss verbally abused him after he made a mistake at work and told him to leave. He received a P45 three weeks later. He was in his third year of apprenticeship when he was dismissed.
The painting and decorator company did not attend the hearing. Adjudication officer John Tierney accepted the apprentice’s uncontested evidence and found the unfair dismissal complaint well founded. He noted that no procedure under SI 146/2000 had been used in ending the employment.
